This training was created to instruct school staff how best to encourage students who use eye gaze systems to communicate using their device during interactions. It teaches skills such as confirming the eye gaze system is ready to be used and ways to prompt responses using the device.
The training was made with a focus on school-aged students with multiple disabilities who use an AAC system via eye gaze. Anyone interacting with them could benefit from the training including teachers and support staff, related services personnel, and families.
Case: Tabitha is a 12 year old student with cerebral palsy. She uses an AAC system with eye gaze to communicate. The SLP wants Tabitha to use her device to communicate with more staff at the school. The DSP completes the training and begins using the strategy they learned to support Tabitha during their communication interactions. As a result, Tabitha responded with her device more frequently instead of just smiling all the time.
