Offering Choices to an Adult in a Work Setting INSTRUCT Video

  • by

This training was created to teach support staff in a sheltered workshop environment how to offer choices to individuals who otherwise may struggle to indicate their preferences of tasks. While the training may be beneficial to use with anyone who is a beginning communicator, its focus is on young adults with autism working in a sheltered work environment. It uses a young adult with autism as an “actor” in the video models.

Case: Ty is a 23 year old man with autism who recently started attending an adult day program. He primarily uses body-based communication including moving toward or away from preferred/less preferred options, general excitement, and facial expressions. The staff wanted a way to meaningfully allow him to decide which tasks to complete first during his day. You may be a staff person working with Ty for the 1st time and need to know how best to offer him choices throughout your shift with him.
